Joe Tufts's amazing picture looking toward the north from Honar's summit. (75 Kb)

During one afternoon after being stymied by snow, we went to the Laguna Chaxis to see flamingoes. It is about an hour's drive from San Pedro de Atacama through the town of Toconao and beyond over the Salar. At the National reserve, a guide went with us to answer questions. Mariano and Carlos translated for me, as usual. (175 Kb)

Another flamingo picture from Laguna Chaxis. (220 Kb)

A final flamingo picture.

Another view of Lincan Cabur from near the paved road. At the middle of the bottom third of the picture is a vizcacha (sp?), an animal Luke described as half marmot and half rabbit. They were often seen where the dirt road up the front side peeled off from the paved road (35 km marker). (250 Kb)

Near the Rocas Negras, on the day of the big snow, we saw three vicunas crossing the road. We tried to get close to them to take pictures. This is about as good as we got. Look at the big one to really see them. (280 Kb)

Another shot with three vicunas. (290 Kb)

One vicuna standing on a ridge line silhouetted against the snow. Overall, I was amazed how much life there was above 4000m. (310 Kb)

The lone vicuna against the ridge. (280 Kb)

Another one of the lone vicuna on the ridge. (290 Kb)
